Thankful Thursday

Today I wanted to take a moment and say some of the things I am most thankful for as the year 2010 comes to an end.

1. Hubby’s job and the hard work he does to provide for our family

2. Two beautiful healthy children

3. Great family – mine and my Inlaws

4. Heat because it is COLD outside!

5. Friends… and you know who you are!

Thanks ultimately goes to God for without Him none of it would matter. Thanks God for a wonderful 2010 and I’m praying for an even better 2011!!!

Reflecting on 2010 (and 2009)

About two weeks ago I noticed a tweet update by someone that stated they were “reflecting on their theme for 2011”. It got me thinking. I have never done this before. In fact, it’s been years since I’ve had goals. I noticed something though… each year has a recurrent theme. I may not notice it right away, but it’s there. Not all have been spiritual. So as I have sat and reflected as well, I realized my theme or word for 2010 was this: brokenness. No, I didn’t give myself this word but it still is what it is. In fact, if I sit and ponder it even more I’d have to say this word describes 2009 as well.

In order for God to work in our lives, we have to be broken. We have to realize our frailties. Our humanness. Our inability to do anything apart from God. Now, I’ve been saved since 1993. I know my Bible well (but never ever well enough). I know how to pray but I don’t do it often enough. Even this past year where I have felt the pull away from mainstream, away from what “others” are doing and enjoying… I am still so far from where I know I should be. I was saved while in school. I was a “sometime” Christian. Sometimes I’m saved and care and other times, well… those other times I didn’t. The life of a high schooler. Sadly, I have lived that life for most of my Christian walk. A sometime Christian. A Christian when it’s convenient.

Near the end of 2008, I met a friend who’s total existence would permeate my life. She would make me rethink so much. She would press upon me the desire to really get to know Jesus. Not just as my Saviour, but as my friend. I had never thought of Jesus as a friend before. He was my Saviour, my Protector… there when I needed Him. But up until that point, that’s really all I thought of Him.

For anyone that knows me, you probably have guessed that person is Julie. She is so on fire for the Lord. So ready and willing. She may not think this about herself, but she knows God. Her heart is open; she is full of Jesus. Just being around her made me desire God more.

So in the start of 2009 I found myself craving more. Wanting more. No longer satisfied with the hum drum lifestyle I’d been living. Tired of only calling out to God when I needed Him or was afraid. The actuality is this: I need Him every moment. I need His arms wrapped around me at all times. I need Him to guide my footsteps. I need Him to show me the way. There is never a moment in my day when I don’t need Jesus. Amazing that it only took 15+ years to get to this point. I’m so thankful God is patient with me! He has never given up on me.

A quote I really like by Samuel Chadwick “It is a wonder what God can do with a broken heart, if He gets all the pieces.” Isn’t that the truth? How often do we find ourselves broken down or completely shattered, but instead of giving our self to God, we attempt to pick the pieces up by ourselves? We try to reshape what was broken. It’s not possible. The clay can not reshape itself. It has to be molded by the Potter’s hands.

In the Autumn of 2009, I began a study at my church with a group of ladies. The study was on the book The Mind of Christ written by T.W. Hunt and Claude King. I can not speak highly enough of this study! If you have never read it, go get it. It will change everything you thought you knew. Or… at least it did for me. This book brought something to the forefront for me. I was full of pride. I had never considered that. I had never thought I was full of pride, not even a little bit. Oh my how God can use man made tools to show us what we need to see.

Through this study, God revealed much to me. So much so that in December 2010, Julie and I decided to embark on reading this study together again, at a much slower rate. Instead of focusing on it each day, we are delving in deep with each day’s study giving us a few weeks on each “week” in the book. Sharing our insights and what God is teaching us. Yes, it is slow and it will take quite a while to go through. However, I personally have gained even more by doing this again and doing it at a slower rate.

As 2010 comes to a close, I am not sure if God is fully done breaking me. What I do know is that after much prayer and pondering, God has been bringing two words to my mind for 2011. Two words that will be my focus for the upcoming year. And I’m both nervous and excited. I’ll share them soon with you! Until then…

Home Alone

At least that’s how it feels!

This morning we waved goodbye to the Inlaws. They didn’t leave until almost 10am! Late start for them and they will be hitting rain for most of the day. A long nine plus hour drive. Yuck. Had a great time while they were here though.

Now that the holiday is winding down, I am about ready to knock down the Christmas tree and put away the holiday stuff. It will be good to do some cleaning ’round here. Much needed. Today is my lazy day though. No extended family. No errands to run, nothing I need to do. (well, other than dishes and starting some laundry). Kids and I are just going to relax and enjoy the day. John won’t be home till 7pm. Then he’ll be on mornings for the rest of the week. Yay for that! I much prefer it when he works the same hours each day. Makes it easier on everyone.

One of my Christmas gifts was the Shrek four pack blu-ray set. I love me some Shrek! We watched two of them with the family and tonight we will be watching Shrek the Third. Wednesday evening will be the fourth one. Looking forward to both of them. :)

I pray each of you has a wonderful day. I am reflecting about some things… blog posts to be coming. On my goals for the New Year and on a theme/word(s) for 2011. So stay tuned. Until then…

Christmas Time

Christmas was fun. My Inlaws arrived on the 20th and will be leaving on the 28th (tomorrow). A little recap of Christmas day…

Kids and I each woke up at 8am. Took care of the dog. Then they went to wake Daddy. They have to wait for their stockings until Dad and I are both up and ready. After stockings, we prepared breakfast… homemade biscuits, sausage gravy, and monkey bread. Can we say YUM?! It doesn’t get much better than that. Showers after and then they were able to open their goodies. Boy were they spoiled. Eleven new Wii games (thank you Swagbucks). Lots of books. For Hannah: Webkinz, dolls, American Girl doll stuff, how to learn guitar, Kung Zhus and more. For Benjamin: Webkinz, Kung Zhus, legos, dragons, his much desired Harry Potter Lego Castle, and more. Together they also received Apples to Apples (Junior), Blurt, crystal making kit, and puzzles. Daddy got Apples to Apples the adult version as well. Here’s a couple photos.

Dinner was Turkey and all the fixings. Yumm-o. We invited neighbors to dine with us. Then that evening after friends were gone and the kitchen was cleaned up, we celebrated my Mother in Law’s birthday (she’s a Christmas baby)… we had Lemon Meringue pie and Chocolate pie. We played hours of Apples to Apples as well…first the junior edition with the kids and then once they went off to do their own thing, we broke out the adult version. Oh my… we laughed until we cried. That game rocks. Thanks to Julie (again) for introducing us to A2A in August. Those games are loads of fun!

All in all, I had a really good Christmas. Was able to speak with my parents and brother. This was Christmas #12 spent without them. Not an easy thing. And this year actually hit me hard. I’m thankful for technology and the ability to see and share photos and to talk with them on the phone. I’m hoping the New Year will bring me a webcam so we can start Skype-ing together :)

Sunday we went and saw Harry Potter 7 at the Edwards Theatre. Oh WOW. Great movie. The kids loved it too. I am thrilled they kept to the book so well and I cannot wait until the last movie arrives in theatres in July! Yay! After the movie, we came home and the boys made homemade noodles and cooked up a delicious turkey noodle soup and some cornbread.

So that was a bit of our Christmas weekend. Hope yours went wonderfully too!

Quiet ‘Round Here

So I know I’ve been super quiet lately. I have so many things I want to post and I know I could make the time to do it. I just haven’t. I stink! I miss writing and posting and all the fun of blog world. I’m trying to get myself back into it though. Please bear with me. I did re-do my page a bit with a Christmas-y theme. I love it. (not that I’m partial or anything!) More to come soon.

The Dozen Without The #4

1. Is there a word which you initially mispronounced? Were the circumstances in which you made the faux pas embarrassing? By the way, that’s not “foax pass.” (I know you know that. Just jokin’ with ya.)

Well, the one that comes to mind is Del Taco. Many moons ago, I called it Tel Daco on accident… and it has just stuck (at least between hubby and myself… others might not *get it* though).

2. How do you feel about the use of texting shortcuts and trends? (ex: “I’ve got ur notes. Get them 2 u 2morow.”)

Personally? Stupid. There is no logical reason for the use of shortcuts. Even as I say this, I realize I do it as well. Not as much, but it does happen. Sadly, many kids today cannot spell well at all. I have some cousins/friends that are young on my facebook and man, it must be embarrassing to not know how to spell words properly. Then I think to myself “Am I snobbish for feeling that way?” Truthfully, I might be. I was taught to write, not to use shortcuts.

3. Tell me about your high school senior picture. Please feel free to post.

Um, yeah. I might get back with you on that. I just looked and there are no photos of my senior year on this computer. Hmmm.

But since it is already Wednesday morning and the chance of me finding a photo is slim. Just pretend I’m some gorgeous knock out.

Ha ha. Okay. Seriously. My senior photos were the norm. I smiled my cheesy smile. No glasses at the time. Long curly hair. I don’t think I’ve changed all that much really. Except I wear glasses ALL. THE. TIME.

5. Share a high school or college homecoming memory.

I lived through it, doesn’t that count? I try not to rethink about high school. It’s such a terrible place to spend one’s time.

6. Linda at Mocha with Linda wants to know: “Do you prefer sunrises or sunsets?”

It is rare for me to see a sunrise. Mornings are not my thing. So I would have to go with sunsets!

7. Lea at Cici’s Corner asks, “What is something you have not done that you desire to do?”

Oh there are lots. I’m just not sure there is enough medication in the world to get me to do them. I mean, I want to do them. On paper. But the actual DOING of them? Scary. Things like:

ride in a hot air balloon

jump out of an airplane

travel the world

8. Carol at Wanderings of an Elusive Mind ponders, “If you could come back [in another life] as an animal, which would it be?”

Hmmm… since this is only hypothetical b/c I know stuff like this isn’t possible… I would say perhaps a Bald Eagle. It’s not my favorite animal BUT they see so much from above. It would be wonderful to fly.

9. Joyce from The Other Side of the Pond is curious: “Where were you 10 years ago?” Please feel free to elaborate more than just your physical location.

Ten years ago today… so that would be October 13th, 2000…

I was living in Pomona, California. I had been living there for 364 days. I was newly married (July 16th) and four months pregnant with our first child. My husband worked at Telpro, a telecommunications business and did quite well as a level 4 Supervisor.

I was 2500 miles away from my family, my past, my life before John. I was lonely. All of my friends were friends of John first. I felt like a tag-a-long. In fact, most of his friends were male and still single. Talk about making it difficult for me!

We were in a church but it was a large church and we were not connected.

It really was a rough patch of time for me.

10. When you are proven to be correct in any contentious discussion, do you gloat?

Oh how the truth hurts. *Ahem* Yes, sometimes I gloat. Sometimes I don’t. In my mind, I tell myself not to, but sometimes it just seems to fly outta my mouth without my permission.

11. What is your favorite food which includes the ingredient “caramel?”

Caramel popcorn, made at home. Yum.

12. From my 17 year-old daughter to you: “If you could be part of any fictional family, which family would you choose and why?” (She’s so cute. And clever.)

This one is harder than it seems. The idea of it sounds awesome. So then I started thinking of my favorite books and stuff. Pride & Prejudice (Bennett family). But really, do I want to live in the time frame? No.

So then I thought The Ingalls family from Little House but again, I would not have handled that very well.

Continuing on… I have chosen…

The Weasley Family

Yes, that would be in the Harry Potter books. Why? Well for one. They are wizards. HELLO?! Since this is just fictional anyways, I might as well pick a family where talent and magic abound. And they all have red hair. I love red hair. I’d be happy to dye mine!

And they are down to earth and quite humorous. Love the Weasley family. It’s like coming home.

Glad to be…

HOME. Yes, so glad to be back at home.

For those that may not know, we went to California to see John’s parents for a week. Left on the 2nd and came home last night (the 10th). Drive itself was okay. I am not a good traveler. Nope, not at all. I do not like desert and being surrounded by nothingness. So Nevada pretty much stinks in my opinion! However, the time there went well. I took a bunch of photos and will be loading them onto my computer sometime today, I am sure. Will post a few on here soon.

Chow for now. Off to catch up on my Reader and see what all I have missed. he he

Fall into Reading 2010

Sorry for the post being sent before it was written… I had it sent to go thinking “Oh I have plenty of time to get this done” and then *ahem* forgot! So if you got the post via a reader, it was pretty empty! This one is finished. :)

Katrina over at Callapidder Days is hosting Fall Into Reading again this Fall. I am super excited. The Autumn weather always incites me to read more, curled up in a quilt with hot tea or hot chocolate to sip on. Yum. The rules are quite simple. The only real rule is to post what books we are going to read and then… *drumroll* Read them! Anything else added is up to us.

I must say, our weather has been PERFECT lately here in Idaho… it is currently 50 degrees and gonna be in the mid 70s today. Ahhh… love it!

Okay so here is the list of books I would like to get read during Fall (or as I like to say, Autumn). Time frame: September 22nd to December 20th.

Note… many, many of the fiction books are books I have owned for a long time. They have sat on my shelves… and it is time to dust them off and get these books read!

Alrighty! That is my selection for Autumn. There will probably be some changes throughout… if I can’t stand a book, it’ll get nixed. Also, I am going to visit my MIL in October and she is a bookaholic too… so I may be able to nab a few books to read as well. There will also be more additions to the children’s section as well. This was all I could come up with for now though.

Can’t wait to read some of the others out there… :)

Happy Reading!!! Fall into some books!

Randomly Fall…

Yippee… it is FALL  people! September 22nd… yeehaw! (I love me some Autumn!) Here is the newest RD.

1. Have you, or has someone close to you, ever won an award for anything?

Yes many in school. Nothing major. Just simple goofy awards. I couldn’t even tell you what they were but they are probably shoved into a box ’round here somewhere! And my hubby… He is an Eagle Scout so he has quite a few awards through Scouting too. I’m very proud of him!

2. Who is the nearest relative to you who has served in the US Military?

My Father…a Marine

3. Share something that stirs the patriotic spirit in you.

Singing patriotic songs can do it. So can watching events of 9-11. But 0ne thing that gets me every. single. stinking. time… videos of our heroes coming home and seeing their families. Children crying as their parent cradles them, all decked out in their attire. Military men stepping into a room and their wives running into their arms. Breaks my heart every time!

4. Where are you in the birth order in your family? Do you think your “placement” made a difference in your personality?

I am the baby of the family… out of two kids. My brother is eight years old than me. Yes, I think God places us where He does for a reason. It definitely made a difference. I’m the baby and I *always* get my way (cough, cough, sputter)

5. Name one trait you hope you carry that was evidenced in your parents or grandparents.

Gosh, this is hard. I see lots of traits about them that I’d like to have. Their faithfulness to God. Their loyalty to their country. Their desire to work hard.

6. If female, do you prefer wearing skirt or pants?

I love how long flowing skirts feel … and if I had a huge variety of them, I’d probably wear them more often. But I don’t. And I do not often buy them. So I stick to pants, primarily jeans. Jeans are comfy. I like comfy.

7. Approximately how many times do you wake during the night? What do you do to go back to sleep?

I don’t really know. Many times I go all night without waking… unless I don’t feel good and then well… you know. It could be many times!

I just lay back down. Sleep eventually comes, right?

8. Share a favorite movie quote.

A favorite… as in ONE favorite? As in ONE single favorite quote from ONE single favorite movie? What the heck? Not even possible. Get ready…

Lord of the Rings – Fellowship

Pippin: What’s that?
Merry: This my friend is a pint.
Pippin: It comes in pints?
Pippin: I’m getting one.

Aragorn: Gentlemen, we do not stop till nightfall.
Pippin: What about breakfast?
Aragorn: You’ve already had it.
Pippin: We’ve had one, yes. What about second breakfast?
Merry: I don’t think he knows about second breakfast, Pip.
Pippin: What about elevenses? Luncheon? Afternoon tea? Dinner? Supper? He knows about them, doesn’t he?
Merry: I wouldn’t count on it.

Lord of the Rings – Two Towers

Merry: You’re taller.
Pippin: Who?
Merry: You!
Pippin: Then what?
Merry: Than me!
Pippin: I’ve always been taller than you.
Merry: Pippin, everyone knows I’m the taller one. You’re the short one.
Pippin: Please Merry. You’re what, three foot six? At the most? Whereas I’m pushing three seven, three eight.
Merry: Three foot eight? You did something.

Lord of the Rings – Return

Eomer: You should not encourage him.
Eowyn: You should not doubt him.
Eomer: I do not doubt his heart, only the reach of his arm

Dirty Dancing

Me? I’m scared of everything. I’m scared of what I saw, I’m scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you.

9. What is your favorite Fall candle scent?

Um, all of it (?) Nah… but okay. I love getting Yankee Candles. My faves are their Apple Cider, Maple Pancakes, Autumn Leaves, Harvest, Pumpkin Pie, Spiced Pumpkin,  and Vanilla Pumpkin

10. What is one Fall activity you are looking forward to?

I love Autumn. It’s the most glorious season of all. I look forward to everything… decorating for it (done!)

Drinking hot apple cider with cinnamon donuts, wearing sweaters, watching the leaves fall…going on nature walks with the kids and picking a selection of leaves… pumpkin picking. Making pumpkin bread. Fresh. Oh yummy.

Oh and of course… the best Autumn holiday………no, silly. Not Thanksgiving. It happens on November 17th each year. It’s MA-BIRFDAY!!! :P

11. Tell us about a pleasant surprise that happened to you recently.

A pleasant surprise eh? Like what? Um… hmmm. I’ve had lots of things happen lately… just no woohoo surprises, ya know what I’m saying? I haven’t won anything, no one has popped in for a surprise visit… I’ve not been anywhere (altho I am going somewhere soon)…oh you know what? Hubs did the dishes the other day. No asking. No nothing. He just got right to it and did it and that was great because I didn’t have to do it. And that was a very pleasant surprise!

12. What was it like when you first met your in-laws-to-be?

When I first met them, eh? Well, the day I met them was October 17th, 1999. I’d been in California for three days. Had already experienced an earthquake. Oh that earthquake ranked about 7.1 on the the Richter scale. Yup. I felt it. So that Sunday the 17th, we drove from Pomona, CA… out to Hesperia, CA. Met his Gramma Buhl (Father’s Mom) and his parents for the first time. They were nice people from the get-go  (and I thought from the very first time I met him that my FIL looked like the white version of Papa Smurf). It was about 100 degrees out there in the desert. They played Rummikub and chatted the day away. Dinner was this bean and slaw dish. It was the absolute nastiest thing ever. I can still taste it and the vinegar and feel like washing my mouth out with chocolate! I remember calling my Mom afterward and saying it will never work because the food was horrible. LOL Well, it did work out, he he. We’ve been together ever since!

Sings My Soul #1

Well, this isn’t the first time EVER that I’ve done this but it’s been so long and my goal is to do it on a more frequent basis so starting over with #1. he he

I love this song. This is by our former Worship Pastor at our church. He wrote it for our fellow friends that were, at the time, in prison over in Haiti. Such a beautiful song. He’s very gifted!

I chose it this week because I’m trying to learn more about leaning on God, letting Him be my all in all. It’s not easy, but my spirit has been thirsting and I want it to thirst for Him. God is so faithful, always there, always waiting. Never abandons us and loves us even when we are at our worst. I don’t deserve Him and I don’t know how to love Him enough.

Faithful God
Jesse Shuster

Yesterday, today and forever
You are mindful of me
Just when I think I’ve been forgotten
You come through and save the day

I will praise You even when it hurts
When my spirit thirsts, my God
You are faithful God
I will trust You
Your light will lead the way
You’ll do just what You say, my God
You are faithful God
You are faithful God

Everywhere, through any danger
You have pledged Your love for me
I have a hope
I have a future
Lord, take my hand and lead the way

I will praise You even when it hurts
When my spirit thirsts, my God
You are faithful God
I will trust You
Your light will lead the way
You’ll do just what You say, my God
You are faithful God
You are faithful God

Your power unfailing
Your promises never changing

Randomness

1. Do you do garage sales? If so, tell me about one great find. If not, tell me why not.

We occasionally do garage sales. It’s not that we don’t like them; oftentimes it is simply because we are broke! Can’t buy extras when there is no money in your pocket! One of our great finds was a set of four chairs that we purchased for $30 that we use around our round table (our game / puzzle table). They are super comfy and in great shape.

2. Name the last thing you fixed.

Um, breakfast. Yup, I *fixed* breakfast… although I never knew it was broken.

3. Name your A) Favorite item of makeup OR B) Favorite tool

Wowza… favorite makeup. Lip gloss from Bath & Body Works. Favorite tool… uhm, my husband cuz he can fix anything!

4. Which room in your home needs organizing more than any other?

Classroom… namely the closet. I still have lots of boxes piled away in there. Whenever I need something and *think* it may be in there… watch out! It becomes tornado central in this room as I take it alllllll out to go “a searchin”.

5. Which room could use re-decorating?

Kitchen/family room (combo room b/c they are open to each other). I’d really just love to paint these rooms, make some curtains (or buy them, much quicker), and pretty them up. Someday.

6. Share something unique about your town.

Our town has one of the first churches built in the state of Idaho.

Our town’s Main Street was periodically used as a race track in the early 1900s.

A number of those that died along the Oregon Trail can be found in our cemetary.

7. If you could send a one-sentence message to your great-grandchild, what would it be?

Live your life with God in control and it will all work out in the end.

8. Do you Facebook?

Yup. Far more than I should. That place is SERIOUSLY addicting.

9. Describe your favorite shoes.

LOL. Um, well… I am not a shoe person. I have three pair I rely on. My green Crocs, my steel toe boots, and a pair of New Balance shoes. Nothing fancy, nothing fun.

10. Do you listen to more talk radio or more music radio? What kind of station is it?

If they talk for more than 10 seconds to tell me the weather, traffic, and name of the previous song… I change it. I don’t turn on the radio to listen to others drone on about their thoughts and opinions. I can read faster than they can talk anyways.

As for music… I listen mostly to Air 1.

11. How far would you travel for a really good (favorite) meal?

No need to go too far. The best cook in the Treasure Valley resides in my own home (and NO, I am NOT talking about myself!). My hubby rocks the cooking world.

12. If you were totally honest with yourself (and us) what should you probably be doing right now instead of blogging?

Reading blogs or on facebook. Oh wait… you said what SHOULD I be doing… hum. Cleaning. Getting my shower and getting dressed. Exercising. Prepping for class. Yeah all that stuff. But this is more fun, dontcha think???
